Online / Distance Learning

Enroll anytime and study from anywhere in the world. Complete the TESOL Certificate IV or Diploma online at your own pace with the support of a qualified distance trainer to guide you through your studies.

Students are provided with around 700 pages of course materials (in print or on-line) especially written for the LTi TESOL course. Assessment work is submitted via the LTi TESOL On-line Student System (TOSS).

Practice Teaching is a vital part of doing our TESOL Courses and we provide you with a 150 page Practice Teaching Guide which includes all the paperwork you will need to complete your Prac in a meaningful and professional manner. A good prac experience also looks great on your resume and can position you even better to get that job of your dreams. Read below for more information about the Practice Teaching part of doing our Course online and by Distance Education.

Course Duration & Study Hours

There is no set schedule for distance learning and the time it takes a student to complete the Course will depend on such factors as:
  • ability to study
  • how much time can be given to study each day or week
  • English language knowledge and competence
  • past experience with any kind of teaching
  • motivation to finish the Course quickly
  • desire to do extra study and research along the way
  • other personal factors including health, family, financial and employment circumstances
In the past, some highly motivated students with excellent reading and writing skills have worked intensively to complete the
Certificate IV within 4 to 6 weeks. Other students have worked hard to get it done in 3 to 6 months and still others have taken 6 to 9 months, or a year or two.

Unless otherwise stated in any specific Course information, LTi allows students the following maximum time to complete the Courses:
  • Cert IV - up to 2 years
  • Diploma - up to 2 and a half years
Students that need more than these maximum time frames must apply for and extension and pay an Extension Fee.

Full Time vs Part Time
Students can choose to be "Full Time" or "Part Time". However, there is no additional fee for changing from Full Time to Part Time. Also, a Part Time student may finish the Course as quickly as a Full Time student.

Based on the official hours allocated to these Australian Government accredited courses, the following times apply. Please note that students may complete the Courses in more or less time due to their ability, motivation and many other considerations (as outlined above):

10695NAT - Certificate IV in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Full-time:   12 months allowing 12-15 hours per week
Part-time:  24 months allowing 6-8 hours per week

10688NAT - Diploma of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Full-time:  18 months allowing 15-20 hours per week
Part-time:  30 months allowing 10-12 hours per week

Practical Placement

To give you a hands-on, real experience, students are also required to complete practical placement (observation & practice teaching) in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class :
  • CERT IV - 12 hours of practical placement with a minimum of 6 hours practice teaching
  • DIPLOMA - 20 hours of practical placement with a minimum of 10 hours practice teaching

LTi will work together with Distance Students to find a placement organisation: LTi may know of institutions that have previously hosted LTi students which are close by, or which the Distance Student is willing to travel to. On the other hand, the Distance Student may know of institutions that they can approach themselves.

If an organisation or Practice Teaching supervisor requires payment for taking a TESOL student for Practice Teaching, LTi will consider making the payment for the Distance Student (providing the payment being asked for is considered reasonable by LTi).

LTi has some fixed arrangements with Practice Teaching Host Institutions within Australia and around the world. Some of these "Prac Locations" are identified on this website where we list "Locations" for both:
  • "Face to Face Class Locations" (which could be called tutorial locations) for anyone doing an LTi TESOL Course - including Distance / On-line students
  • "Prac Locations" at which LTi has formal arrangements for Practice Teaching.

The cost of doing the Course by Distance Education with Practice Teaching at these special "Prac Locations" may vary from our "standard" fees.
  • Sometimes the cost may actually be lower - but you may need to pay for travel and accommodation to the location.
  • Sometimes the cost may be higher - but the value of the experience, or the convenience, or the possibility of job prospects following Practice Teaching at the location may be worth it.
